I having a certain problem playing games. All of the sudden the computer just shutsoff and a very loud siren comes on. The only way to switch it off is to kill the power in the powersupply. The PC is warm about 61'C but it is well within the emergency shutoff temp. Also there is no warning when it stops, just 'poof'. The only odd thing is it only happens playing certain games. Here are my specs, I am stumped.

Abit NF-7S
Geforce3
DDR3200 1x512
100WD
40IBM
Pioneer D-116
Liteon 52x Burner
Enermax 300
Lian Li PC60

When you say "the PC is warm about 61C", what do you mean exactly?

If you mean the CPU temp is 61C then that's too hot.
If you mean the CPU temp is 61C and you are running bios 1.2 or later, then that's *WAY* too hot. If you mean the Case temp is 61C, then that's *WAAAAAAAAAAAY* too hot.

Get the message? Its too hot ;-)

Chip.

What chip are you using? This sounds like your power supply is shutting off. 61C is way too high for a T-Bred processor, and probably about right for a Palamino. If it's a T-Bred, then I'd recheck the seating. I'm using a 300watt also,{which is the lowest size recommended by AMD} but I dont think my radeon draws as much as a gforce3, which is probably why the shut-down is occurring.

Thanks guys for responding.

I suspected it was a heat related but what I don't get is why does it always shut off on certain games, but not others. I can type word docs for hours and nothing will happen. But load up Icewind Dale II or Pirates of the Carribbean for 1 second and BOOM!!!

Assuming its a heat problem. How do cool down the CPU?
I have 3 Case fans (no more space available) 2 blowing in 1 blowing out. I am using Volcano 7+ with Artic Silver III. What more can I do? Will getting a bigger PSU help? Finally as it turns out I was planning to get a Radeon 9500 Pro tommorow maybe that will help?

Make sure the heatsink is correctly mounted. It may just be that the heatsink isn't good enough to cool the processor and you need to buy a replacement. You don't mention what processor you have?

I completely agree. He doesn't mention what voltage he's putting through the CPU, but we can assume its stock volts. (Nightwing: you haven't messed with the volts, have you?) And assuming its stock volts with that amount of airflow, something is wrong - there is no way the temps should be that high. My guess is the HS is either not seated correctly or there isn't enough AS3 in place.

I had an argument with someone on another thread about this, but I stand by my position: For the vast majority of people who aren't experts concerned by 1 degree C of difference, the best policy is to use a decent big blob of AS3. The temps will hardly be any different from those if you apply the "thin layer" as specified by Arctic Silver. And you can be sure the HS is making good contact. The trouble with this "thin layer" nonsense is that its all too easy to not have enough - especially if the base of the HS isn't perfectly flat.

(Nightwing: don't go silly with the AS3 though - be reasonable. You want enough so that you can be certain that the HS will be making good contact all over the CPU's core, but not so much that it will be spilling everywhere.)

Is the motherboard cpu voltage set to the voltage indicated on your cpu?

If the voltage on the cpu is set right and the frequency of the cpu is set right, and its overheating, then your heatsink is not mounted correctly.

Will getting a bigger PSU help?

Definitely not, unless your current one is defective. You would notice this by seeing higher voltages, as reported by the bios, then what your voltages are set to.
