You can put the drive on the chipset ide controller whilst installing XP

I did that and pressed the F6 key but was never prompted for the 3 1/2 " disk. Presently have placed it on the Sata 1 connector with Serillel connector the drive is recognized in the sata boot screen but it will not boot to windows. The drive is a 80G WD 8mg it worked fine on IDE. I then reformatted installed XP again and still was not prompted for the Sata drivers after pressing F6. Now when I boot the computer goes through the boot screen and then I get a message drive can't be found. Bios is set for CD-rom, Serial ATA,Floppy for boot order.

What is the proper procedure to set up boot drive on SATA? bios settings etc. there is not much information about the Serillel adapter and the use of it. Abits site is sorely lacking. Unless I haven't found the right location.

Hi, you must press F6 at the first blue XP setup screnn, tap the key a few times. Works everytime for me..... Chris "Manno" wrote:

I installed XP on a drive on one of the IDE controllers. I then used the CD and installed the SATA drivers while in windows. I then placed a new drive that I purchased on the SATA 1 connector using the Serillel connector. The drive was initially seen by XP but not by the bios. I then changed the jumper on the hard drive to the neutral position, across pins 4 & 6 (see jumper settings on the WDC site). Drive works fine & is seen by the bios & XP now. Based on this, I'd say that both XP and the mobo are picky on jumper settings.

I originally formatted the new drive on IDE since I couldn't get it to boot or install XP on the SATA adapter. I then tried to switch it to SATA and the system would not recognize the drive. I played with every jumper/bios setting I found on the various news groups. The best I could get was it was recognized in the boot screen and XP would start to install. Everything went fine until it asked to format the drive. I tried the reformat both quick and error check mode and it would go to the 100% mark and then give me a error that the disk may be damaged or to check SCSI cables. Even tried a format in recovery console. The drive formatted but when I went back to XP the formatting was not recognized.

1:30 this A.M. put it back on IDE reformatted and all is fine. When I left this morning computer was running at 217 x 10.5. which is where I had it before I re-attempted the SATA connection.

What ticks me off is the lack of info for this device. ABIT provide no instructions on its setup other than how to plug it in and the connections are poor to say the least. There is at least a dozen posts on different forums of what others have done to make it work but there is recommendations or support from ABIT. They may have a good over-clock king board but their documentation leaves a lot to be desired.
