Hi Folks,

A small question/concern with my new nF7-S v2.0 system if I may.

Every works great but I've noticed a quirk with the IDE controllers.

I have a DVD-ROM(master) and a CD-RW(slave) on the primary IDE channel, nothing on the secondary IDE.

When I disable the secondary IDE controller in Bios, the primary seems to be also disabled, as my DVD/CDRW are not recognized in windows. Is this a normal thing?

I'll probably change to put each on it's own IDE as master, but I'd just like to know why I'm getting this behavior. On my previous P3/Asus CUSL2 mb I didn't have this happening.

Also when I do put something on the secondary, like an old HD as secondary-master, but remove it's detection in the CMOS, the bios boot doesn't detect it but when windows boots it is there and accessable. Not a problem, but seems strange. I'd like to keep a backup IDE drive "offline" incase my SATA drive gets corrupted, but as of now I can't seem to do that as Windows is detecting it regrdless of bios settings.

Thanks for any insight/help.

My system details are :
BartonXP2500, NF7-S v2 mb, 2x512PC3200 Ram, GF2-gts video, using onboard sound,... Running WindowME.

Cheers
Ken

No, its not. You should be able to disable the secondary controller without affecting the primary. (I can with my nf7-s)

Yes, it is odd. I can't think why your MB is doing this.

It seems something odd is going on. I am fairly sure that if I disable a controller, then my Windows XP doesn't pick up the devices attached to it. But I have noticed something similar - when doing an XP install, it always finds my IDE hard disks even when their controllers are disabled in the BIOS. Similar to your problem in a way.

But regarding a reason and a fix, I am sorry I can't help. The only thing I can think of is perhaps clear the cmos, remove the battery even, and reload the bios defaults, then reconfigure the bios and see if it fixes things.

Chip.

Thanks for any insight/help.

Chip,

I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I think I'll try the clearing of the cmos, and if the situation persists contact Abit for assistance.

Thanks again,
Ken
