Hi all,

Recent purchase of NF7

Tried to install XP on 200gb WD HD...got this error during installation "E:\I386\asms Installation error Parameter incorrect"

I realized this is an issue fixed by XP SP1 (HD larger than 137gb)...and decided to install XP on 40gb HD instead of making a slipstream CD of XP.

I reflashed bios, just in case...and have all bios settings optimal (no tweaks yet).

I still get the same exact error during XP install.

Any clues to fix?

Thanks in advance!

Faulty cd? Have you tried a different cd?

Hi,

I use the NF7-S. Not sure about that error? was it the same both time you tried?. I never used a huge HDD yet so I have no experience there. I am wondering if you memory is running properly, I say that because I had some problems a few weeks ago installing XP-SP1 on someone else's machine, kept stopping set-up with a random error message!. At first I suspected there was something wrong with the install disk or IDE cables but after a big trouble-shoot it turned out the memory was flaky, this was discovered by using Memtestx86. Once I removed the dodgy ram install went fine.

Anyway in your case it may be as I have mentioned above or indeed there could be a problem with your HDD?

Sorry I couldn't be more help. .

I have two ( 2 ) NF7-S v2.0 w/Barton 2500+s, and I have only once had a problem and that was not with install. However, I have a question about your question - for clarification, what exactly is your installation doing with drive "E:" and which partition/drive is it?

Thanks for replies...

The error I reported "E:\I386\asms Installation error Parameter incorrect"...where E:\ is the CD drive...the HD is partitioned.

Things I've tried so far...

- Changed XP CD's...tried 3 different ones so far (one with SP1 built in)
- Changed CD drives
- Swapped PSU
- Verified HD works by puttin in this machine and xferring files to/from it.
- FDISKED and reformatted the HD before each new attempt at fix.
- Taken bios settings to "Fail Safe", "Optimal", and all stops in between.
- Tried with only one mem stick (each of them)
- I even tried puttin the new HD in this machine and copying the whole \I386 folder onto it from the CD...and running setup from there

Bout outta ideas...gonna try putting the HD and CDR on the same IDE channel next, and see if that does it.

Again, thanks for the responses!

You don't need to fdisk or format the disk before installing xp. It comes with it's own formatting and partitioning tool.

endup,

Perhaps you need to use the fdisk and partitioner provided by microsoft instead of a third party one... Perhaps if its formatted as NTFS and there is someway to tell windows to reformat it to FAT32 on installation?

What/where from the FDISK/Partitioner? What type format is used?

I have found that type of error once, in attempting to install after FDISK/Format outside of XP installation disk with NTFS format - worked with FAT32 though, but I only did that as an upgrade and not a clean install. Using Partitioner/Formatter from within install/setup XP worked - although it was slower...

Well as with most puter issues...operator error is usually gonna come into play.

I had a brain dump and formatted the HD via a boot disk vs. XP. And, in my stubborness, thinking it was a hardware issue...I continued to make the same mistake.

After some detachment from the problem...that one brain cell the alcohol didn't reach slapped the rest in line and I FDISK'd the thing and let XP work its magic.

Thanks to all for inputs...now for some tweakage
