Hello

I have built a system based around abit-NF7-S system board. However I have problems with the system when it comes to playing games.

The system generally functions in windows fine however when running games the macine either garbles the screen and crashes...in older games such as grand theft auto 3; or in newer games such as splinter cell, plays for around 20 minutes before freezing compltely.

I have the most up to date drives for the system which is as follows.

Win 98 SE,
Athlon XP2600
NF7-S Mainboard
Gainward GF4 2800Ti 128MB 8x Graphics
-Generic PCI Modem

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this problem, or had similar problems themselves?

Also, the system in windows has problems playing MP3 files. They play fine on other PCsbut on this one, the try to play too fast and result in choppy perfomance. I've tried the latest versions of media player and winamp, both do the same.

Kind Regards
A.Hulley

What sort of cpu temperatures are you getting under load?

What type of memory are you using, go back to SPD memory settings in the bios.

1st what is a GeForce4 2800TI?
If it a Gainward TI series they have a known fan problem -- the fan tends to quit running or slows down greatly (you can tell if it is a heat problem on youR video card by touching the back side of the card - BE CAREFULL - IT MAY BE REALLY HOT they also have made a number of bad cards that produces what is called the "pink screen of death" since the problem tends to turn the screen pinkish. If either of these is true then you should return the card to your vendor or Gainward. The fan problem is usually caused by the lack of clip on the bottom of the shaft and the fan blade sorta slips down until the fan jams. You can check this by laying the computer on its side with the fan on top and the fan blade pushed down slightly to its original position and you can watch it turn. repeat your gaming and see what happens. You can repair this but finding a small clip is not easy. (an old cpu fan may have a clip that you could use but this process is a pain in the ***)

The above may not be your problem and it could be caused by an overheating CPU and you will need to reinstall your heatsink Most likely an overheated CPU and you can check that by simply checking your CPU temp

could be other things like a driver or conflict problems but the things above are the most likely

Thank you everyone for your help.

I solved the problem in the end. The problem was not with heat (system temp about 58 - 60 deg under load). The problem was that the system seemed to malfunction with gainwards own graphics drivers on the system (Golden Sample 750XP AGP8x 128DDR) , but after updating to nvida's drivers, everything worked ok:-).
