Observation about Macs and Mac OS versions

  1. I am not a Mac user, but I just found out that:

Oldest System that runs on a Macintosh Plus: 3.0
Oldest System version that runs on last desktop 68000 Mac (Mac
    Classic): System 6.0.7
Oldest System version that runs on last portable 68000 Mac (PowerBook
    100): System 7.0.1
Last version supported on 68000 Macs: 7.5.5

Oldest System that runs on first 020 Mac (Macintosh II): 4.0
Oldest System that runs on first 030 Mac (Macintosh IIx): 6.0.1
Oldest System version that runs on last 68020/030 Macs (Mac LC 550/
PowerBook 150): 7.1.x (but these Macs were released only 3-6 months
    before System 7.5 was released!)
Last version supported on 68020/030 Macs: 7.6.1 (7.5.5 for non 32-bit
    clean macs)

Oldest System version that runs on first 68040 Macs (Quadra 700/900):
    7.5.2
Oldest System version that runs on last 68040 Macs (PowerBook 190):
    7.5.2
Last version supported on 68040 Macs: 8.1

Notice how close the "Oldest System version that runs on last xxxxx
Macs" and "Last version supported on xxxxx Macs) are. Espicially that
the last 68020/030 Macs (Mac LC 550/PowerBook 150) were released only
3-6 months before System 7.5 released!

officially, but they'll boot older versions.
this will also boot an older version.
this is incorrect. it is 7.0.1:

also incorrect, and it is 7.1.1:

  4. Oldest System version that runs on last 68040 Macs (PowerBook 190):
7.5.2 is correct, as they are similar to the 5300s.

they are similar only on the outside.

the 190 used a 68040 and the 5300 was a powerpc. two very different
    designs.

Actually the 190 could run up to 8.0, but 8.1 was the last 68040
    version. See

    for all the nostalgic details.

Never mind. I see you are talking about the *oldest* version, not the
newest. 7.5.2 is correct, according to Apple.
