old board IRQ problem

I'm setting up my old LX-6 for a friend. I'm encountering an old problem that I forget how to fix. I installed the soundblaster card (live value) and then the modem, and the modem (3com usr internal) complained it didn't have a free IRQ to use.

How do I fix this?

you could make sure that SB Emulation mode was disabled in device manager and free the IRQ associated with that. you could disable one of the onboard com ports and free up the IRQ associated with that.

You may try to relocate the cards in the PCI slots and let the board configure the IRQs again. Some slot allows sharing of IRQs and may free some IRQs out.

The modem will want IRQ 3 or 4, so you have to disable at least one serial port, since they take IRQ 3 and 4 (for the second one).

Thanks to everyone. You know, I seem to remember something about creating IRQs above 4 by different address irq combos. Ring a bell? I barely knew what I was doing then, clueless now.

Thanks to everyone. Uninstall/install worked after some slot swapping. For now, anyway, it is working. I have all the advice printed out for future ref, however, because I have no faith that the machine will continue to work.
