I have a P4P800 deluxe with a sata book disk and a regular ide disk for
storage. I want to add a notebook hdd to the regular ide cable for addtl
storage (other ide cable is taken by two dvd drives). Using a notebook
ide interface adapter I added the notebook drive, but on boot only the
sata book disk showed up. All of the disks were powered on, but both
regular ide drives failed (all are of recent vintage)

One thing that I've never understood about ide connectors is that some
have a filled plug and some use all plugs. I this case, the notbook ide
adapter male side (side towards cable) has the pin; the ide cable has a
filled plug. In the past I've just bent the adapter pin out of the way
without issues. Could this be contributing?

Solved, just had to rearrange jumpers.

Still curious about why the ide pins can be different, and if not using
    a pin has any impact?

  3. Still curious about why the ide pins can be different, and if not using
    "IDE pinout"
    first hit:

Pin 20: Just a filled key hole so you can't reverse the connector,
probably many manufacturers use the cheaper standard connector
with all contacts in place as the connector body has a key too.
There are some mobos with the male connectors just being
two rows of pins without body and only "1" written on the board.
