P4T-E suddenly fails booting W9x but Linux still works

  1. My trusty old P4T-E has been dual-booting W98 and Linux
    since October 2001.

Today, all of a sudden, W98 refuses to boot. Linux boots
    and works fine, as usual.

It can't be the C: file system, since (a) I did a fresh
reinstall on a different box, and (b) simple W95/W98 boot
floppies hang before even printing "Loading Windows 98...".
    (Linux boot floppies work.)

    I did a BIOS update to 1008 beta 4 (using a modified
IBM/Hiatchi drive fitness test boot floppy), but that
    made no difference.

Pulled all extension cards, and even replaced the AGP
card with an known good PCI graphics card, but still
    no joy.

    Any ideas?
