    Do yourself a huge favour.

    Get hold of a utility (e.g. RAMDISKPRO) that converts available system
    RAM (make sure you have an absolute minimum of 1GB of memory, and use
    384MB of that) into a virtual hard drive.

    Set up Photoshop to use that drive as a scratch disk.

    Obviously, 2GB of system memory and 0.5 / 1GB of RAMdisk is better,
    depending on your needs.

    The application will fly.
