password authentication

I was given a dell inspiron 8600 laptop with no powercord and dead battery, ordered an ac adaptor and get this message when powering up laptop.

this computer system is protected by a password authentication system. you cannot access the data on this computer without the correct password.

any way to bypass this . laptop was abandoned by evicted tenent in my apt. bldg. maintenance gave it to me.
