possible hard drive failure?

  1. I believe one of our older G4s has been showing signs of an imminent
hard drive crash. However, before purchasing a new HD etc., I would
like to rule out other causes.

The problem has occurred at least 3 times in the last 3 weeks, and
once about a 6 weeks ago. Quite simply, when the user arrives at work
in the morning, her computer is on, but unresponsive. She forces a
restart (using the small button on the front of the G4), but cannot
get past the flashing question mark/happy Mac icon.

Disk Warrior and Norton's both easily resurrect the drive. However, I
have up until now been negligent about recording the errors. I seem
to remember trouble with the directory structure or boot sector.

For those of you who know, is this an early stage of hard drive
failure, or could it be software that causes the system to crash? I
plan on doing a few tests today, but if it sounds like hardware
failure, then I won't even bother.

    Thanks,
    joseph

if there's any critical data on it, back it up right away! which you
    probably have already.
