First, here are Core 2 Duo retail prices from Sharky Extreme:

    E6300 $186
    E6400 $229
    E6600 $335
    E6700 $545
    X6800 $998

Those are boxed kits that include CPU, heatsink, fan, and 3 year warranty.

Now for the Dell Precision 390...

Starting with a $729 config *which includes an E6300*, CPU upgrade
    prices are:

    E6400 add $319
    E6600 add $489
    E6700 add $709
    X6800 add $1,134

Slightly OT: Dell uses Crucial RAM. Dell charges $190 for a 1 GB upgrade.
The same RAM can be purchased directly from Crucial for $155.

Dell uses whatever RAM is cheapest the day they build your machine.

Dell also ships samsung for warranty repairs. Many MANY times the RAM
they sent was just as bad as the RAM being replaced. Lately it's
gotten better, but for the longest time it was really annoying. And
the phone techs despise sending the same part out twice.
