I'm in the USA. I want to build a PC as a gift for a friend in the UK. Am I going to encounter problems in shipping it to him? Are there taxes, duties or import fees to be paid?

Thanks.

Unfortunately, yes there are :(

"Any goods valued at more than 18.00 that you order and pay for from outside the European Union are liable to import duty and VAT. If the goods are a gift from a private individual to a private individual the limit is raised to 36.00"

That quote is from the Customs & Excise site:

http://www.hmce.gov.uk/news/reg-nr-nw-6302.htm

36 is roughly $60 - So, unless you've managed to build the PC for less than that :O then your friend will have to pay import duty and VAT @ 17.5% :(

Also, incase you didn't know, we have 240 volt mains supply here. So if you include a psu, make sure it is not 110 volt!

Ahhh, but do they apply if the item is a gift?

One possible way around this is to mark the item 'Warrantee Replacement'....that way no duty is payable...it's worked for me in the past.

It may be based on UK law but the last time I looked, NZ wasn't in the EU :)

It'll only be a matter of time the speed countries are joining at the moment.

Let me know where you get the oars at. I keep having to deal with Sh*t Creeks, and I constantly find myself without oars, or a paddle for that matter.
