Hi,

I have a RAID-0 Array running on a BD7-R MB, and I was wondering if I could keep the same array and run it on a motherboard using an ICH5-R chipset without having to rebuild it...

Thanx

In fact, I meant the VIA6410 RAID controller, not the ICH5-R (wich is SATA-RAID) . "Matteo" wrote:

one is Highpoint and one is either Intel (ICH5-R) or SI (on some boards) and no, the raid will not work without being rebuilt under a completely different controller hardware setup. you would want to start fresh with the OS anyway so back up the data files on the raid array and then start fresh. after you're done getting the new system on its feet, then you can reload the data files from the backup.

I still doubt that a Highpoint raid array would work under a different controller without being rebuilt from scratch by that different hardware controller

Hi Tom,

I have successfully transferred, intact, a RAID0 from a Highpoint 370 controller to a Silicon Image controller (don't remember which model). I'm not an advocate of trying this, just stating that I did it once.

As a matter of fact, if memory serves me correctly, Silicon Image pretty much pioneered the IDE RAID hardware/software combination even though most everybody never heard of 'em till recently. They were OEM suppliers to several board manufacturers, possibly even Highpoint in the early days. Virtually ALL of the software/firmware in todays IDE RAID controllers is derivitive of work done by Silicon Image.

Just sharing a little of my store of knowledge ... some say it is vast, others half-vast.

well, count me in those that had never heard of SI until recently. still, I would not bet anything on being able to make that transfer... it's be
*great* if it worked out but I'd be having a complete backup of the array so that when (in my case...) it took a dump, I'd be able to recover.
