Hi,

I currently have three sticks in my machine of PC2100... thats 133mhz right?

now, my machine is overclocked by the fsb, which is at 139. with Ram setting to SPD it means that the ram is at 139 too does it? if you set the bios setting to 133 will it run at 133 or 139? and if I change to PC2700 Ram would the 166 setting be 166 or 172mhz?

Mobo: KX7R with an XP2400+ 1024meg PC2100 ram.....but possible future change to pc2700 or more....

Thanks

Nominal, yes.

Maybe, maybe not. Depends entirely on whether the "by SPD" setting will automatically set the memory bus divider, and when it does, whether it'll drop the multiplier in response to the fact that you're basically running the memory outside its spec.

if you set the bios setting to 133 will it run at 133 or 139?

If the FSB is 139 and the memory bus has a setting that says "133", it should theoretically pick a 1:1 multiplier and run the memory at 139, yes.

and if I change to PC2700 Ram would the 166 setting be
166 or 172mhz?

Again, theoretically 172. If you're going to change your memory in future, BTW, little point going from PC2100 to 2700. May as well go 3500 or faster so you can benefit from the extra speed in a future upgrade path.

Hii,

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I was looking on Dabs.com (99% of my computer hardware come from there) and there isnt a lot of difference in price between PC2700 and PC3200.

Btw I live in Barry... I might go into Cardiff today and see what prices are like on City Road.

Can't fault it, a loyal customer! :-)

Indeedy. It's more than worth the extra in future proofing terms.

I doubt you'd find anything much cheaper, but in any case, price is a secondary issue to quality. TBH you'd be better off paying a handful of quid extra for a stick of known good quality and providence than risking a relatively insignificant saving on memory that could be less than what it claims to be.

Sure, it'll probably be fine, but if you buy PC3200 in the knowledge you're only going to be taking advantage of its full capabilities in a few months or years time, you want to be certain it's going to perform to those specs, and the best way of doing that is with known, respected brand memory.
