I would like to restore datya from some old HDs that I have laying around. Currently I have two MAXTOR 120GB HDs in my computer (NF7-S).

I don't want to open the case, connect these older HDs every time to the IDE cable (as "Slave") and to the power connector each time I need to access the data..

Is there a way (an adapter or cable or...?) to hook up, a HD from outside without getting into the machine ?

Prefer some USB 2.0 adapter but anything external will do.

Thankz.

Any external USB drive enclosure will do, just don't screw the drive down and leave the enclosure open.

How does that enable him to hook the drive up ?

What you could do is leave an IDE and power cable hanging out of the spare floppy bay. But you'd have to fit some sort of tray in the bay, to rest the disk on. Not particularly pretty though.

I've fitted hard-drive caddies in spare 5 1/2 inch bays in most of my machines. They are cheap enough (5-$8). It means that when I get a new/suspect HD I can just slot it in a machine and check it out or whatever....

You just have to remember that although it might look like one - it ain't a SCSI hot-swap caddie :o)

A USB 2.0 "device" + external enclosure is a workable solution ... however ... . insure the 'box' has fans if the HDs are 7k_rpm or better ... 'heat' ... . insure the drivers( supplied with 'box' ) will handle your HD size

Cypress used to supply a generalized 'drive' "zip" file package ...

On the other 'hand' ... as a prev poster has noted ...
a " rack & tray " , aka " mobile caddy " , will also do the job ... Again ... . insure the 'box' has fans if the HDs are 7k_rpm or better ... 'heat' . mite be 'some' cheaper & easier in the long run too .

I've 'fiddled' with both, ... my rack+tray, and a friend's USB20+box ... do have the Cypress driver pkg ... and I think it mite still be available on the Net ... ==> cy_win_5_16.zip.

Me? having seen both ... I like my r&t units ... Lian Li, alum, 2_fan . More simpler_er is more better_er in my book.

Oops!
forgot to mention 2 issues ...
. drive letter assignments at boot
. hot swop

The USB+enclosure+driver mite be hot swoppable( mount/de_mount ) ... ask. "Driver ltr" assignments dont interrupt the IDE drv ltr asignments ...

The IDE rack&tray ... =NOT= hot swop as yet ...
altho I've 'pulled'( dumb move ) one while active ...
no 'smoke', but had to reboot to get it recognized again. Drv Ltr assignments can/mite be a PIA till you get used to it . Cabled/jumpered as 'slave', on your =last= IDE channel, mite help some ...

Uhm ... with a USB cable?

I have four of these and they work a treat. In case you're uninformed, inside the USB enclosure is a standard, though quite short, IDE cable. You can mount/dismount these things all day long and NEVER have to restart the computer.

What is it exactly that you got for $8....??? - I do not understand your solution.

Hey "CT" ...

Very curious ...

What 'drivers' did you use ... Cypress, "mfgr_supplied", or built-in M$ , and under what OS ... W98 or XP ?

Also, if I mite ask ...
what mfgrs :
a) for the USB 2,0 card , and
b) for the 'box', and
c) for the HDs used.

I had a friend who had trouble with " mfgr supplied " drivers ... OS = W98, luckily stumbled upon the Cypress 'kit' ... which worked after a 'hand bash'.

many thanks,
Qed.
