Hi,

I have a KG7 board [setup below] that seems to be running fine. But when I run a 3DMark03 (newest one) it gets about half as someone else with my same specs has. (I get 111 they get 220s). I have updated my BIOS to DM (and everything still seems fine). I did notice that I was in x2 not x4 AGP setting (which didn't seem to make a diff with the 3dMArk test). Which made me start trolling the ng to see what else I am missing. ?

Abit KG7 - XP 1800+
1GB of 2100 RAM
GeForce4 MX 440 (64 MB) (no-name with no fan)
Xp Pro (sp1)
Lian Li Case
2 x 40 GB Quantum Fireballs

I am not really interested in OCing it just yet. I want to know it is running optimally. What are the BIOS or MEM setup/tests that I can do to? Or really anything that you can suggest with this setup.

try disabling your vertical sync like everyone else that run these test (if you look at the specs when major review sites run these test they will show that the vertical sync has been disabled)- dont worry everything will work with it disabled

as a suggestion run mark 02 --- it is a less biased test

for other testing programs take a look at SiSoft - they have a free testing program that most people refer to as "sandra" or sisoft sandra". It is far from perfect but will help.

If you can still find it there was a program from Win Magazine (I think) that was called Win Tune. It is a little outdated but they had no agenda and it was fair. They no longer support it or upload it to their web site but you can use to to do comparisons as you make changes. You may need to "copy and paste" the results to store the test for comparisons

hope this helps

I suggest you be careful and be glad you have a stable KG7. Reading archive posts from Google.com, some of them from the last few days, would show you that there are quite a few folks out there that were working the stability angle.

are you sure you are comparing apples to apples and not apples to oranges? a lot of folks who post their 3DMark scores are overclocking the mainboard or the video card or both. of more interest to me would be how it plays whatever games are important to you... frame rates, etc...

That is true about oc'n the mobo or vid card. I did look at that. My first comparison was with (what it seemed) identical hardware with no oc. But who knows. When I did it again (agp set to x4) I didn't find that same computer to compare to.

I did read about he instabilities of the KG7 lately. Mine actually was a little unstable a few weeks ago and I read about updating the Bios to over come an apci prob. Seems to work for me.

As for games. Well I was playing Wolfenstien:ET online with a friend. And he was getting as good or a bit better FPS than I. And he has a Duron 1100 (or some 1G Duron) and a GForce2MX card. So I started looking into why i wasn't getting some nicer fps. (ie.. here I am in the ng)

Hey TomG.. I have seem your post dating back to 01 (probably further). .You have been really helpful to me with your answers (to other people's questions). Thank you. :)

I will try some searches for new benchmarking tools and stuff tomorrow..

cheers.
Derek

really anything that you can suggest with this setup.

yeah... I've been hanging in this group since back before then... too good a group to miss out on for any great length of time.

regarding your issue, when I had the KG7 and was plagued with slow video, it was a problem with the split chipset and the drivers required in that situation. one way to check of the video subsystem is happy is to load up PowerStrip from entechtaiwan.com or on my server under /utilities. if you look on the adapter info screen, you will see whether hardware AGP is enabled and DMA transfers. if one or both of those are not enabled, it indicates a problem with a driver somewhere... either a chipset driver or a video driver or both.

that is at least a place to start.

Thanks for the feedback Minus200.

I will certainly check out those benchmarkers. I just hope there are online database of results to compare too. I am sure there will (or at least a forum thingie).. [and the vert sync thing too :) ]

Cheers,
d.
