I've been trying to run some old games (as in DOS based!), but am having trouble with sound card combatability. Does anyone know what type of sound card I should choose to get it to work?

Many thanx

If you run XP, try http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/

And see http://vogons.zetafleet.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=900 for a Win9x/ME version of VDMSound.

Any card that has a 100% Soundblaster Pro compatibility mode. A Creative Audigy series card works fine. There are also purely software solutions that will allow almost any sound card to work under Windows versions that don't include a DOS core.

I use Windows 2000 Pro with a SoundBlaster Audigy to run games like 'Steel Panthers' series and the 'Wizardry' series. All that is necessary is to take care to set up the 'Shortcut to MSDOS' property sheet correctly.

My 'Shortcut to MSDOS' property sheet for 'Steel Panthers II' is as follows

Memory: everything set to 'Auto'

Screen: Full screen, Restore settings at startup, Emulate fast ROM, and Dynamic memory allocation all enabled.

The other setings are not, I think, critical.
