Historically I have always gone for the safe Intel Dektop Board option, however my 850MV is getting long in the tooth and I want to be able to overclock my new system. It seems that Abit is the way to go! I would appreciate your advice on the following specs. If I could take the CPU to round about 3,2 with a 1:1 ratio on the memory that would be great! Of course if you have any other ideas I would appreciate those as well. Specs

Antec SX635-II ATX MidiTower Case - Black, 350W PSU
Antec 80mm SmartCool Fan
1GB Corsair TWINX-4000 DDR RAM - Dual Channel Optimised Pair 2 X 512 P4-2.6Ghz/512K/0.13u/S478/800MhzFSB/HYPER THREADING READY "ZALMAN" CNPS7000A-AlCu, Copper + Aluminium heatsink ABIT IC7-MAX3 Motherboard ABIT GeForce FX5600 256MB OTES Samsung 16x DVD-ROM & 52x24x52 CD-RW BARRACUDA 7200.7,80GB,7200RPM,8.5MS,8MB,SATA

Should I go 2 Drives and run them in RAID 0?

Regards

Yup ... "I" are one, but of some 'lessor' techie quality. :-)

Yes ... an Abit mobo + an AMD cpu does allow OCing ...

PSU mite be better chosen as 400W++

Antec 80mm SmartCool Fan
1GB Corsair TWINX-4000 DDR RAM - Dual Channel Optimised Pair 2 X 512

Dbl( & trpl ) check the "selected" mobo 'chip-set' for the ability of your "selected" mem modules to 'fit & play' nicely with the chip_set/cpu...

??? Obtain enuf "matched pairs", rite now, for now+future ???

P4-2.6Ghz/512K/0.13u/S478/800MhzFSB/HYPER THREADING READY

I doubt "Wes N" has a OC 'spec' on 'these_ones' ... most AMD cpus' for sure. "Wes N" ... ???

Of what =real= use is Hyp_Threading to you ???
Kinda like ash_trays in the trunk of a Ferrari ... just MHO.

"ZALMAN" CNPS7000A-AlCu, Copper + Aluminium heatsink
ABIT IC7-MAX3 Motherboard
ABIT GeForce FX5600 256MB OTES
Samsung 16x DVD-ROM & 52x24x52 CD-RW
BARRACUDA 7200.7,80GB,7200RPM,8.5MS,8MB,SATA

I was always happy as a pig in 'shite', that I had my "BUP" on a 2nd HD ... :-) Most 'days' I go 2 & 3 'deep', 6_mo period, indiv ptns ... wall wall XXCOPY ... color 'me' coward.

..........................
??? Vid card & LCD ???
21" CRTs suck ... too big & clutzy, but ... nice for 'color' bashing , ?games? I'm not =any= kinda 'gamer' ... nohow. "TomG" is one to ask about 'gaming'.

YMMV 'some',

All your choices look great with the exception of the video card. The FX5600 will be a very weak link in a very strong system.

A Radeon 9600 XT or Geforce FX 5700 Ultra would be a better choice for under $200. For another $43, you could get a Sapphire Radeon 9800 non-pro that would likely overclock to Pro levels and match up nicely with the other high-end components in your new box.

And if you like Antec cases, take a look at the Sonata. Slightly bigger power supply and better ventilation with 120 mm fan, innovative design, efficient and relatively quiet.

I'm planning to go in the opposite direction, e.e., from an Abit IC7-G to an Intel 875DZP or whatever. Although I don't overclock I've been disappointed by this particular Abit product. I won't bore you or irritate the Abit afficianados by repeating the widely experienced irritations with the IC7 series, such as NB fans falling off, the myth of GAT or the sound system.

I presume you've browsed the Abit fora. If not I suggest you do before going the Abit route. If your determined I'll sell you mine very cheaply!

Skid,
Thank You for your assistance. As per your suggestion I have decided to go with the Antec Sonata + an additional 120 mm Fan. I have also decided to drop the Fx5600 Card and go with a ABIT GeForce FX5800 128MB OTES. I will certainly update the group when the components arrive.

You'll like the Sonata. It's not silent, but quieter than most and looks great. I'm an ATI guy myself, (love that AA and AF,) but OTES is an interesting concept.
