Probably because your e-mail server is different than you news group server. Check your settings in whatever mail program you are using.

I can post/reply post, but not send or recieve emails.

Most typically 'one' needs three(3) different 'servers' to be able to

1. use the UseNet(read/post) newsgroups ...
. an NNTP_Server ie "news1.banet.net" ; "news.shentel.net" . Network News Transport Protocol

2. send an email ...
. an SMTP_Server ie "smtp.banet.net"
. Simple Mail T... P....

3. recv an email ...
. a POP_Server ie "pop6.banet.net" ; "pop.shentel.net" . Post Office Protocol

RTFMs ....
==> http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc0821.txt ... SMTP send/outgoing ==> http://internetconnection.net/support/tech-pop.shtml ... POP recv/incoming

I suspect
a) you havent properly set_up( entered ) your POP & SMTP parameters ... but b) you have set_up your Usenet(News) parm Ok ...

Depending on your OS ... rtfm( your OS ) on how to set these parms ... gotta be a pull-down menu system somewhere ... I use 'legacy bad_habits' ... bash files directly ... know naught about the email/news set-up menus .

Also, you mite need to contact your ISP to obtain
the proper, precise, server 'designators' ...
you already have '1' ...
now you need the other '2' ...

I "assume" you can 'surf' properly ...
which suggests you have the Network Directories set-up properly ... the "DNS" crapola ... which translates your 'symbolic' URL into a net numeric addy, for purpose of net location .
