I wanted to thank Gary Headlee of http://www.motherboardrepair.com for outstanding service in repairing an ABIT BP-6 v.1.1 motherboard.
Everything was working great with the BP6 dual celeron 500mhz computer for about 1 year, then it started to have random lock ups. It got to the point where it would not boot into Windows 2000. It would lock up just before the login prompt. It was able to boot off a floppy into DOS, but it was not even able to run the BIOS flash without freezing part way through.
I read about some of the capacitor problems going on out there (leaky caps) and took a careful look at the motherboard: sure enough the capacitor at EC10 was bulging and leaking electrolyte.
Checked with ABit site to RMA the board and got the following response:
"Dear customer,
Based on the information you submitted:
SN:BP6-TAA035791 (In Wnty:N Missing SN:N)
Original Invoice Avaiable & within Wnty:N
No Physical Damage:Y
The requested item has long been phased out. We are sorry that no further support on this item will be available. RMA Dept ABIT Computer USA cNo:99 "
Then they told me it was OK to RMA in a follow up email a few days later:
"Good news from ABIT!! You won't have to pay the $25 dollar service charge due to a speical case with the model you have requested. I'll go ahead and issue you a RMA number, so just ship your product back without any fee or service labor charge, for further information please call our RMA Department at 510-492-0882."
I was not even sure that ABIT would repair all of the capacitors or just the leaking one at EC10, and buying a new board would just lead to the same problem with leaking capacitors. I had already sent the board to Gary to be repaired, and every capacitor was replaced with a higher quality one for $55 - cheaper than buying a new motherboard and new chips, etc. so now it is working well and no worries about other caps blowing out.
Thanks Gary!
