Thinkpad T40 Heat Issues Revisited ATTN STEVEN

Discussion in 'IBM Thinkpad' started by Maaaaaaaaaark, Jul 9, 2003.

  1. I have been having problems with using Crucial 512 mb SODIMMs in my IBM
Thinkpad T40. I have gone through two Crucial 512s and have come to the
conclusion that they are not suitable for use in the Thinkpad T40. I am not
sure of the exact reason, but my theory is that at full CPU and GFX load
(i.e. running a 3D intensive game), the heat generated by the laptop with 2
SODIMM slots filled and the Radeon and CPU are enough to cause the Crucial
512 module to not function normally. Furthermore, the laptop will randomly
BSOD even if it was not under full load. I did further tests using only an
IBM branded 256 module and an IBM 256 + an IBM 512. There have been no
    bluescreens and no heat-related crashes.

So in summary, I would warn people against buying Crucial 512 parts for IBM
Thinkpad T40s. I have been discussing this issue on ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad on
Usenet also and many people seem to experience similar problems with Crucial
512 parts. I will try and post pictures of the IBM 512 vs the Crucial 512.
The chip configuration is definitely different.

Sorry, Mark, I didn't read your message very carefully. This is what happens
when you answer your e-mail right when you get back from vacation.

So you got 2 IBM labelled SODIMMS (1 256 and 1 512) and it's been stable?

Glad to hear it because like I said, I'm getting my next 512 on Tuesday and
I'm looking forward to a stable device.

Who made the IBM labelled SODIMMS?

I've got photos of the Crucial SODIMM I sent back, are you interested in
    seeing them?

Drop me a note at and I'll send them to
    you.

    (remove NOSPAM)

    Take care,
    Steve

  3. Hi Steve

Well, I borrowed the 512 from my friend's T40 and I've already returned it
to him. I foolishly forgot to take a picture of the IBM branded 512. I did
remember to take a picture of my Crucial 512 so I guess I don't really need
your picture. On the IBM 512, the chips were arranged double sided 2x4 on
each side. I don't recall the brand :| I went and ordered a 256 from IBM for
my T40 so I have 512 in total rather than 768 in total. It's not an ideal
solution but the 512 price on IBM is too rich for my blood. Good luck with
your 512, let me know how it turns out.

  5. The chips on mine were definitely not Samsung. They weren't of any brand
that I had heard of before.
