Three beeps during startup, restart, but still works

When I start up my computer, after a certain period of time (either
during startup or if I'm in BIOS), the screen will go blank and the
computer will give three beeps (all equal; not one long and two short
    or whatnot).

I read that this means there is a memory problem. Here's the weird
part, though. I can hit ctrl-alt-delete and it will return to exactly
where it was before that and then continue booting normally. The
computer works perfectly fine after that.

Help! I'm concerned this might cause permanent damage. Thanks
