hi again.

Does anyone know how to fix it...

I've got Plustek UT16 USB scanner. When I plug it into external USB port, it behaviours very weird. Sometimes it works ok and sometimes f.e. after reset or turn off pc NOT. I can't C my USB scanner listed in Device Meneger.

The funniest is... that after plugin' scanner into expansion slot i works better.

The same weird behaviour I've got with my Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer v3.0A USB Mouse :(

what's wrong with that mobo? corrupted or what?

I didn't change my factory bios so far. It's default.

ABIT NF7 v2.0
winXP Pro + Serv.Pack
nForce2 Drivers 3.13
Chieftec 360W PSU
XP (8x200Mhz) _revA0

I think a lot of people on NF2 boards get USB issues.
You could try another BIOS or driver, but it may not help. Alternatively, you could just buy a PCI USB card and hope that sorts it once and for all.

Some USB devices, often scanners, draw more current than the external ports can provide. A self-powered USB hub often cures it, though in this case you've already found a way to make it work.

It's strange... because I didn't have that problem when I had my old mobo Soltek 75KAV KT133A - twas powered by Codegen 300W, now I have Chieftec 360W so its even more annoying.

funny... I bought mobo that doesn't want to work with scanner supporting only 1.1 USB. :[

I've tried nForce 2.45 drivers and now v3.13... nothing has changed, still the same problem :(

it's not a good solution for me... I'm getting more nervous about it. It's silly... they should have check NF7v2.0 10000 times before they put that mobo into stores!

He's running XP Pro, so he'll get a low power warning if it's an issue.

Yeah, but shi'ite happens.
My o/b NIC doesn't work both ways, so I fitted a card. For the gain of retaining an NF2 board, it's worth the "dough".

It's NOT unique to this motherboard and NF2 chipset,
it's a common problem when plugging in a USB 1/1.1 device into a USB 2.0 port, the newer faster USB 2.0 ports are supposed to backwards compatible, but this is not always the case. I have found that the older USB 1/1.1 devices work best when plugged into a USB 1/1.1 port.

What do you mean "expansion slot"?

I wonder - the USB ports; Are they physically on the motherboard, or are you using the bracket or maybe front USB ports connected to one of the headers?

Chip.

I meant bracket :)

nice compatibility ;)

...so I did something, entered BIOS settings and changed USB ports from v1.1+2.0 to v1.1 :) it's better now :)

That makes sense. Thats why I asked you if you were using the ports on the bracket on the board itself. USB2 requires much better noise suppression / shielding than 1.1 and thats means you can get problems with the connectors themselves. I'll bet you would find the problem also disappeared if you used the motherboards own USB2 ports (in USB2 mode).

The problem with your "solution" is that you now can't use any USB2 devices. OK if you haven't got any, but what happens what you buy that new USB2 scanner, or maybe a USB2 card reader or external hard disk. You won't want to be running in 1.1 mode.

yeah I know :) I don't have any USB 2.0 devices at this moment...

Was wondering, the Abit manual recommends using USB 2.0 cables, rather than the old ones that came with your equipment. Assumed that had to do with the shielding issue required with 2.0?

Yeah... U're right, didn't check it before.

I found NOTE:
User's Manual for NF7/-S, Chapter 3p21

"Please use the special USB cabel designed for USB 2.0 specyfications. Otherwise, it may cause not stable or signal error situation."
