The window appears automatically when I reboot the computer and I have to
click on exit to get rid of it. There is nothing in the startup file. I
    have windows 2000.
The autohide option is greyed out.

How do I fix this? Should I reinstall?

What window exactly is it that appears? You sure it is soundcard related?
