Hi all,

I've got an Abit VP6 board that I'm trying to revive after a hard drive failure. Here's what I've got....

Original YT BIOS
Dual 1 Ghz PIII, not over clocked at all, no raid
512 Mb of PC133 ram, one stick
FX5200 video

And a new Maxtor 120 Gig drive.

I'm trying to install Linux on the system and that seems to go fine, the system boots from CD and finds the drive and installs and loads all the software, seemingly without problem. However, when I restart the system to boot from the hard drive, it won't boot. It posts fine, and finds the hard drive fine (though slowly sometimes), but it won't boot from the drive. And I have set it up to boot from the hard disk. No difference with the drive plugged into the regular IDE or the Highpoint controller.

Any suggestions?

If you can boot from CD, then there is no reason why you can't boot from harddisk, assuming
- you loaded LILO to MBR
- you put HDD1 in the boot sequence, and removed floppy/CD.
- you performed the correct incantation ritual with a virgin (a key insight often overlooked)

Are you sure that the boot partition is marked as "Active"?
