Which SATA disk to use for IC7-G during XP install

Looking at the driver downloads section on the Abit site for the IC7-G, I see a couple of "disks" listed....one is titled "Silicon Image SATA driver disk" and the other is the "Intel Application Accelerator RAID" disk.

What I'm wondering is which one to use during the F6 thing during Windows XP install for the SATA drives on the ICH5 SATA controller. The way I understand it, is that you need one of these during the XP install for Windows to be able to even "see" the SATA drives on the ICH5 SATA controllers to proceed with the XP install. The SI doesn't seem like it, and the other one seems to imply that its for RAID on the ICH5--which I'm not planning on using.

Which one do you need--or is there a different one? The reason why I'm wondering is that I want to try and have all the latest drivers (audio, LAN, etc.) before I do the install, but I don't know what I'm looking for in this case. Does the Intel disk actually have all the SATA drivers on it also? If I use the one that comes with the kit, will Windows Update find new SATA drivers (if there are newer ones available) for the ICH5 when I run it after the XP install?

Thanks

I would first make sure you are running at least 1.7 mainboard bios (1.8 is newest) so that the Intel ICH5-R bios is updated. then I would hustle on over to Intel and DL the newest drivers for the "F6" floppy that is used for installation of a new OS on the raid and I would also DL the matching drivers (in the event you ever need to load them at the OS level) and the matching Intel Application Accelerator -- Raid version (IAA-R). I carry all of that on my site at the address below under /drivers and the files are dated 9/21/03. The SI drivers may have been updated from what is on the floppy or CD that came with the board, I'm not sure. I'll be checking into that myself to see and if I come up with newer drivers, I'll have them on my site as well.

If you don't mind me asking which IC7-G are you purchasing. A Max2 or Max3.

If you are buying a Max2 there are 2 SATA ports right behind the IDE channel. Those are the Intel ICH5-R ports. And the 2 Silicon Image Ports are along the bottom of the IC7-G. Which I think you are planning on using.

When you press "F6" at Windows XP setup choose the Silicon Image driver. Or you can just add both when it asks "Add Aditional" after installing the Silicon Image driver.

Hate to sound dense here, Tom, but when you say the "RAID", you're referring to the ICH5, right? Even if I don't use RAID functionality, you're still calling the ICH5 SATA controllers "RAID" controllers?

Hey Bill

I'm looking at the IC7-G Max II.

The configuration you spoke of is how I understand the board is set up from looking at the manual.

Actually, I'm now considering buying SATA drives and going strictly with the ICH5 SATA controllers. Tom G. had some good points that the ICH5 is faster. I'm not planning on using RAID at all, so I don't think I need the SI controllers (numbers 3 and 4, I think) for anything. I assume I'll still need to install the drivers for them at some point (if, for no other reason, than not to have "!" in the device manager for them).

So, assuming I will have SATA drives on the ICH5 SATA controllers (numbers 1 and 2, I think), do I use the "Intel Application Accelerator RAID" disk during OS install? Or do I even need the drivers at that time, as long as I have the drives connected to the ICH5 controllers. In other words, will the ICH5 recognize the SATA drives without the drivers installed (kindof like how an IDE controller works even though it's drivers haven't been installed). Again, I read somewhere that you needed to do this, but I'm not sure of what the context was--maybe they were talking about having to do this if you were installing drives on the SI controllers.

I'm just confused as to exactly what is on the Intel Application Accelerator RAID disk.. It sounds like there are ICH5 SATA drivers and other stuff for RAID support, which is separate from the SATA support. The "Application Accelerator" is even something more on top of that--is that the "GAT" mentioned in the BIOS setup?

Know I'm probably making this harder than it really is...just hard to visualize what I need on floppy to do the OS install since I haven't done it before.

Thanks
Randy

That is exactly what I'm not sure of what I need.....

the ICH5-R controller will work as a regular SATA IDE controller without raid functionality or as a raid controller. if the raid bios is disabled and raid mode is disabled, it is my recollection that you do not need any drivers since the controller runs as a regular ide controller. however, if you run in raid mode (which still will allow a single drive and no raid, believe it or not...) or especially with raid bios enabled (which STILL allows single drive or dual drive and non-raid mode!) then you will require drivers. the F6 drivers are required if you are going to be installing an OS on a drive that is connected to the SATA controller with raid mode and raid bios enabled.

You would be looking for drivers for the Intel raid controller. I am not exactly sure what the nomenclature is on their web site but I had no problem finding the drivers there.

And when you say "DL the matching drivers", what are they and how are they different from the previous "F6" drivers?

how is one newer version of any driver, video, ide controller, sound card, or whatever device, different from the previous? that would possibly be spelled out on the Intel web site but at the minimum, you should run matching drivers and bios revisions as they are meant to be run together just as a Highpoint controller bios and driver set are intended to be matched. bad things can happen when you run mis-matched bios and driver sets for a hard drive controller.

And, are the Intel Application Accelerator drivers different still, from
the
ICH5 drivers?

the IAA-R is nothing more than one -- a GUI that runs at the OS level to allow you to view, change, create and delete raid arrays, and, two -- loads some optimizations to take advantage of some features inherent in the Intel controller. It is good to load it when running the ICH5-R SATA controller in raid mode with the raid bios enabled to ensure that you are getting everything out of the controller.

From your response, it sounds like the SI floppy is *not* the one I want for the "F6" at installation, right? I'm guessing I can install those after
the
OS is in, since the SATA drive will be on the ICH5 controller during the install.

you would load the SI F6 floppy drivers if you had a need to see the drive mounted on the SI SATA controller during the installation of the OS. if you don't have a need to see that drive (as the OS will not know how to access the drive on that controller without the help of the drivers and the drivers are not built into the OS) then you can hold off on loading the drivers and then the OS will request drivers once it starts to enumerate all of the installed devices.

Sorry for the SATA ignorance--first time at it. :)

Gotta learn sometime...

Tom

I get it now!!!

I thought that it must be something like that. I was just getting the whole RAID thing mixed up with the SATA functionality. But, as long as I don't want RAID and disable it in the BIOS, it sounds like the ICH5 will give me SATA performance "out of the box".

You're patience is outdone only by your knowledge, Tom. Thanks so much for the time you spend helping.

good luck with it... I ran a hard drive on my ICH5-R SATA channel for the first several months I had the board without enabling the raid mode and raid bios and all worked great.

I think both are Native within Windows. Atleast in the newer XP disc with Service Pack 1 on the CD.

RAID is easy to understand.

Raid 0 is 2 hard drives (both must be the same size and speed) running as 1 single drive, expect Raid controller will breakdown a file and store part of one each disk

Raid 1 also having 2 hard drives. With this setup one hard drive is actually a mirror image of the other. It is having back-up if one drive should fail.

Raid 0+1 is just a combonation of both.

Yes these are the IAA Raid edition drivers, but only needed if using Raid.

Also make sure you get the latest Intel INF drivers.

Bill

Bill

I think the thing that's confusing me is that from talking with you, Tom and Skid [I'm guessing, since I don't have it yet] there must be three parts to the driver disk that Abit sends:

1. ICH5R drivers
2. RAID drivers
3. IAA GUI

The disk that I downloaded from Abit's site only has files on it that are "iaStor" files, which I'm guessing must be for (2) above. Parts (1) and (3) above must be included extra on the disk that comes with the motherboard and not available on the disk for download from Abit.

I'm probably stressing about it more than I need to. I'll just see what I get with the kit. I just wanted to get the latest ICH5R drivers for SATA only (if there are such a thing) ahead of time, so I'd have the latest drivers available at install time.

I'm still thinking that the ICH5R has SATA capability native, just like it does for the IDE 1 and 2 controllers.

I know RAID is supposed to be something really great, and I'll probably get into it one of these days.

Thanks, Bill

If you're not setting up a RAID array, the only thing you need for the ICH5R is this:

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=1043&DwnldID=6536

You don't need IAA. You don't need a floppy. And you should install the above file first thing after you install Win XP. Directions are included, and there's a README here:

ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support%2f6536%2fENG%2freadme.txt

I can't make it any simpler than that.

Someone else will have to help you on drivers for the SI controller, I'm using the vanilla IC7. But I would suspect the drivers on the CD and the owner's manual would get you where you need to go.

Thanks, Skid.

I actually have the INF utility (same version you pointed me to) from the ABit download site. I'll install it right after I install XP.

I know I'm being a pain....don't mean to be. Just want to be sure.

Thanks for your help.

Someone else will have to help you on drivers for the SI controller, I'm using the vanilla IC7. But I would suspect the drivers on the CD and the owner's manual would get you where you need to go.

you're not being a pain but you might be making things more difficult than they really are. just get started and see where things take you and with what Skid just told you and I indicated already that you don't need a driver unless you are doing raid, you can hopefully move forward and get things set up.

certainly, post back if you encounter another situation that you can't work through and we'll try to give a hand with it...

Thanks, Tom. I'll let you know how it goes.

the
ABit download site. I'll install it right after I install XP.

I know I'm being a pain....don't mean to be. Just want to be sure.

Thanks for your help.

You don't need IAA. You don't need a floppy. And you should install the above file first thing after you install Win XP. Directions are included, and there's a README here:
