Who's using my TOSlink optical sound output ?

This has happened to be a few times. The system insists on outputting
sound via internal speaker because the optical sound output is "busy".

I can select it in System Preferences (no error message) but it still
doesn't functionally change and when I return to System Preferences, it
is back to internal speakers. With the SoundSource, it just won't let me
    select Digital Out.

Today, quitting all apps capable of generaing sound didn't solve it. So
    I rebooted (shock ! Horror !).

Out of curiosity for next time, is there a way to find out which process
is hogging the optical port ? Is there a standard device name for the
    optical port ?

  2. I've found that can be absolutely nothing using the optical port but it
still won't work. The MacOS X audio drivers are crude, buggy, and prone
to causing kernel deadlocks. Be thankful you're not trying to use
    Bluetooth audio too.
