What would happen if I used the clicked on the "format" c: within
windows xp. I mean of course it would format the c: drive and permit
even relabeling it if desired, but would it still leave the c: prompt
    available but empty??

  2. No. First, I don't think that Windows will let you do that. It knows
that C: is the system drive, and it may not let you actually format it.
But if it did, it would wipe out everything, including Windows itself.
There would be no operating system at all left on the drive.
