external monitor

    I have a Compaq Presario Laptop Model 17XL260 with Windows XP Pro Edition. When attempting to use an external monitor, The owners manual tells me to press the Fn and F4 keys together to switch to the external monitor. When I do this the computer shuts down. I also cannot see how to switch to an external monitor by going to the "Display/Properties/Settings" Window.
