MMAP for accessing Binary files

Dear Friends,
I am downloading FAT16 files to flash using USB (from windows explorer) on ARM board. When i access files through MMAP at evey 512 bytes few extra bytes (may be file link pointer) are added other than file content. These extra bytes will give unwanted bytes in MMAP. How to avoid this extra bytes.
